Located in the Louisville Highlands, this project transforms the historic 1916 William R. Belknap School into a 31,000 square foot residential complex. Work Architecture collaborated with Wilkinson Builders to convert the original classrooms, theater, and administrative offices into 25 new apartment units while ensuring the property qualified for historic tax credits. To achieve this preservation goal, the design team carefully retained essential architectural details like the stone exterior facade, interior terrazzo, and original flooring. We also worked closely with the contractor during construction to develop immediate design solutions for unexpected structural conditions uncovered behind the historic walls. The resulting $8 million adaptive reuse successfully preserves a neighborhood fixture while integrating modern residential spaces into the original building footprint.
